What is SEO and How Important is it to My Company’s Success?
The Webopedia defines SEO as "Short for search engine optimization, and is the process of increasing the number of visitors to a Web site by ranking high in the search results of search engines. The higher a Web site ranks in the results of a search, the greater the chance that that site will be visited by a user. It's common practice for Internet users to not visit pages and pages of search results, so where a site ranks in a set of search results is essential for directing more traffic to the site."
They go on to further say that "SEO helps to ensure that a site is accessible to a search engine and improves the chances that the site will be found by the search engine."
Can't argue with that, right? Well actually, you can. The problem with SEO is that when you're writing copy to a search engine, you're forgetting your target market. The foundation, the very essence of good copy says that you write to your target market. Good content requires a benefit and quality information not just a bunch of keywords smooshed together in an article.
So how do you solve the problem? How do you combine SEO writing with good article copy? First and foremost you must concentrate on writing good copy. Once that is accomplished then you go back into the copy and see if you can replace or fit SEO key words into the copy. Do not sacrifice the copy for the key word.
Many top notch, and excellent sales producing, copywriters will agree. It is possible, and probable with good sales copy and article content, to have a very successful on-line business without SEO optimized copy. It is also possible to have the best of both worlds; however it is necessary to be patient. To have the best of both worlds you're going to need to test your copy and conversion rates with and without SEO key words.
AND Keyword Density Kills Copy
Search Engines are smarter than they used to be. Liberally filling your landing page with key words no longer improves your ranking and can in fact hurt your ranking. Instead, consider utilizing appropriate key word phrases and relevant terminology in your copy. Make sure that your visitor is your priority by providing relevant, useful, and compelling information. Place keywords and keyword phrases where they belong in the copy, the headline, first paragraph, last paragraph and a sprinkling throughtout. Your reader's will appreciate it and the search engines will reward you with appropriate recognition.
How Do You Find The Right Keywords?
Keyword research can be conducted via many keyword tools that are available online today including the overture keyword tool the Sitesell tool and Google has a tool on their Adwords page. There are also paid services that will help you narrow your keywords down to a specific high demand, low supply science.
You may also want to consider reading Google's Webmaster Guidelines. It's updated regularly and may help optimize your website and article content. Look for guidelines on content, keyword placement, and design.
When it comes to SEO and your article marketing campaign, you can't go wrong by first focusing on your customer and reader. Providing them with quality content will take you significantly farther both in links and traffic generation than a article written for the search engines.
